MASTERCLASSES

Experiential Solo Performing
Each Full Program Participant plays a half-hour masterclass with a member of our 2025 Guest Artist Faculty. Expert instructors bring a depth of knowledge, variety of career perspectives, and sound pedagogical approaches to inspire and enlighten. Participants will encounter a variety of standard solo, etude, and orchestral repertoire and broaden their knowledge by encountering new works as well.

ENSEMBLES

Chamber Music & Ensemble Playing
Chamber Music is a cornerstone of the Atlanta Horn Festival experience. Participants are assigned to both small and large ensembles that rehearse daily to prepare the annual Closing Participant Recital with an afternoon outdoor preview performance at the Morningside Farmer’s Market.

  • Students are assigned to a chamber ensemble, typically a quartet, that is coached daily by a Resident Faculty member.

  • Students are placed in the High School Horn Choir or Young Artist Horn Choir and rehearse daily with members of the Resident Faculty.

  • Students from both the High School Horn Choir and Young Artist Horn Choir come together for a side-by-side experience in the AHF Mass Horn Choir. The ensemble rehearses daily with a Resident Faculty member.

WARMUP CLASS

Warmup Class meets every morning and is led by both the Resident and Guest Artist Faculty. Activities include various stretching, breathing, and playing exercises to prepare for the day. All faculty, participants, and auditors are welcome to play.

MOCK AUDITION

The Atlanta Horn Festival holds an annual mock audition in two divisions: High School and Young Artist. We simulate a realistic audition environment for the activity. Audition Repertoire is provided prior to the festival. A common warmup space is provided, and the excerpt order is given. Candidates will draw numbers to determine the playing order. The committee is screened and consists of Resident Faculty members. Participants not competing are welcome behind the screen for perspective.* Winners will be announced at the Closing Participant Recital.

*Candidate identities are anonymous to all persons behind the screen.

EXCERPT CLASS

Excerpt class is devoted to reading prominent section passages from the orchestral repertoire. Resident and Guest Artist Faculty members lead this session. A repertoire list is published in advance, and students are welcome to rotate during the readings.
